April 22 celebrates world earth day

22 April 2025

Let’s celebrate Earth Day, which takes place every year one month and one day after the spring equinox, on April 22nd. It's a moment to reflect on the importance of protecting our precious planet – Earth.

To mark this occasion, we’re launching a “Your Turn” on Instagram, inviting everyone to capture and share a glimpse of our planet — whether it’s a sunset or a blooming meadow — to showcase its unique beauty.

“Earth is a beautiful place. Show us your view and tag us”

Our chosen image portrays Grado, an ancient fishing village in Friuli Venezia Giulia, surrounded by a lagoon rich in biodiversity. These areas are living records of the gradual, age-old transition from land to sea, shaped by the rhythm of the tides into a mosaic of brackish wetlands.

The lagoon is a transitional aquatic environment where fresh river and stream waters meet the salt waters of the sea — a hotspot of biodiversity.

The image is a satellite-based composition from COSMO-SkyMed, the first Earth Observation mission designed for both civilian and military use.

Its first- and second-generation satellites act as “eyes” from space, scanning the Earth meter by meter, day and night, in any weather condition. They help forecast landslides and floods, support emergency response after earthquakes or fires, and monitor crisis zones from above.

Developed by the Italian Space Agency in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence, COSMO-SkyMed satellites are equipped with X-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR), capable of seeing through clouds and in complete darkness.
