The Memorandum was signed during the 76th edition of the International Astronautical Congress
Three days of meetings for the Kenyan delegation led by Defense Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, following the ratification of the new agreement between Italy and Kenya for the Broglio Space Centre (BSC) in Malindi, which came into effect on December 16, 2020. The intergovernmental agreement includes five implementing protocols related to training and educational activities for operational personnel at the Broglio Space Center, the establishment of a Regional Earth Observation Center, access to Earth Observation and scientific data, Telemedicine activities, and support to the Kenyan Space Agency.
The official visit to Italy was promoted and organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Kenya in Italy for the first meeting of the Joint Council of Ministers (JCM). The meeting was held at the premises of the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (Mimit) in the presence of the head of the Italian delegation, Adolfo Urso, Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, together with the Italian Space Agency President Teodoro Valente and ASI International Affairs Director Gabriella Arrigo. The delegations held talks about the construction of the Earth Observation Center, the cooperation priorities the two countries are to pursue with regards to the Malindi Broglio Space Center, and the joint strategic guidelines that were agreed upon.
The delegation visited the headquarters of the Italian Space Agency where operational details were addressed following the guidelines defined during the meeting at Mimit.
The Kenyan delegation also paid a visit to the headquarters of Leonardo, Elettronica and Thales Alenia Space. The delegation was received by the top management of the historical aerospace company at its headquarters on via Tiburtina in Rome. While in Rome, Kenya’s Defense Cabinet Secretary, Aden Duale, met with Guido Crosetto, Italy’s Minister of Defense.
The delegation was also able to visit Esa Esrin headquarters in Frascati. The Italian and Kenyan delegations are scheduled to meet again in Naiorbi for the second meeting of the Joint Steering Committee.
