A cycle of monthly virtual meetings on space sciences

31 March 2021

It was launched on March 25th, with an online meeting on a current topic such as the Space Weather and its phenomena, in the perspective of future human missions on Mars: this was the topic of the first seminar of the MoRe-ASI (Monthly Research Colloquia of ASI) cycle, held by prof. Jingnan Guo of the University of Science and Technology of China.

The initiative, promoted by the ASI on a monthly basis, involves a series of virtual meetings which aim at updating the scientific community with regards to the research activities carried out in the different fields of space sciences.

Among these, the field which relates to the Space Weather, a key factor that must be taken into account when talking about human exploration: the meeting focused on ionizing radiations and fluxes of energetic particles of cosmic and solar origin, which are among the main dangers for astronauts’ travels. By describing its dynamics in detail, Prof. Guo highlighted how understanding the mechanisms of such phenomena – and mitigating their effect on the crew and tools – is crucial for human missions.

The event took place virtually, and was followed by an audience of over 130 persons, belonging to different scientific, national and international communities.

This first meeting will be followed by other events from April 2021 to September 2021, with speakers such as Dr. Marco Ajello (Clemson University, Usa), Dr. Eiichiro Komatsu (MPA, Germany), Professor Giovanna Tinetti (UCL, United Kingdom), Dr. Walter Tinganelli (GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research, Germany), and Dr. Manolis Georgoulis (Academy of Athens, Greece).
