The Fucino chessboard observed by PRISMA

04 March 2022

The image shows the PRISMA hyperspectral data acquired in September 2019 in the Fucino Lake area, in Italy. Obtained by processing a L2D product, it shows a false color composite on the front, and the spectral data signatures on the lateral faces.

The Fucino plain is a drained lake in the Avezzano town in the Abruzzo region, which is used for agriculture, as seen from the shades of green in the frontal picture. The lateral faces of the cube show the reflectance spectrum magnitude between 400 and 2500 nm (brighter colors for larger values), and the atmospheric absorption bands can be easily seen.

The plain also hosts the Fucino Space Center, where ground segment activities are carried out for PRISMA and other important missions, like the COSMO-SkyMed constellation.
