Luca Vincenzo Maria Salamone was appointed ASI Director General during the Board meeting on Oct. 10, 2023.

The Board of Directors of the Italian Space Agency (ASI) at its meeting No. 6/2023 on October 10, 2023, approved the appointment of Dr. Luca Vincenzo Maria Salamone as Director General of the Agency effective Nov. 15, 2023.

Dr. Salamone was born in Catania in 1972. He is a State manager with a degree in Law and Political Science, and a lawyer licensed to practice in Italy with a specialization in Public Administration Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Public Law from the University of Rome Tor Vergata and a " Master Degree in Business Law and Public Manager – GEMP and a “Master Degree in International Studies" from the University of Pisa and SIOI respectively. He also holds an “Executive Master in Management of Public Administration (EMMAP) from the Bocconi University School of Management, Milan.

Moreover, Salamone, formerly a senior officer in the Armed Forces, has completed studies at leading national and international higher education institutes, and has nearly 30 years of experience in various positions in public administrations, which have allowed him to gain specific knowledge into both administrative and economic and technical-scientific matters.

In particular, prior to his appointment as ASI Director General, Salamone held the position of Coordinator of the Sea Policies Unit at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.  Previously, as a manager of the Ministry of Defense, he worked at the Secretariat General of Defence / National Armaments Directorate. He was primarily involved in procurement and technological research and innovation in the military and dual sector, both at the national and international level. In this position, he followed specific NATO agreements in the field of defense and aerospace equipment (including Sicral II, Athena-Fidus, and the COSMO-SkyMed Earth observation radar satellite dual system). He has also held various positions in offices working directly with the Minister of Economic Development, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security as well as, quite recently, the Minister of Defense

Dr. Salamone has also been a lecturer in international law, maritime administrative law, judicial police and navigation law at the Livorno Naval Academy and a lecturer at the course on "Dirigenza Pubblica" of the Scuola Superiore, University of Catania. He has also  been a lecturer at numerous undergraduate and postgraduate  institutes. He cooperates with several scientific journals writing scientific publications pertaining to international law and public law with specific reference to the protection of strategic sectors.

Salamone was awarded the title of Cavaliere dell'Ordine "Al Merito della Repubblica Italiana" (Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic) for merits acquired in the performance of his duties.
