Rome, 14th – 15th October 2025
Workshop organized and hosted by Italian Space Agency (ASI) in collaboration with NASA
- Workshop objective
An event to discuss the ASI/NASA LuGRE (Lunar GNSS Receiver Experiment) mission initial results in the context of lunar sustainable exploration in the next years.
Starting from the LuGRE mission description and results consolidated today, it aims to provide an overview of the activities planned to prepare future lunar missions in an ever-evolving international context that sees simultaneously cooperation and competition between private actors for the supply of commercial services and products.
The event involves NASA, ASI partners for the LuGRE mission, and European institutions.
- Background information
LuGRE is part of an agreement between Italian Space Agency and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA GSFC) to carry out an experiment in a cislunar/lunar environment on board of the Blue Ghost 1 lander of the FireFly company in the frame of the NASA CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Service).
LuGRE was one of the 10 payloads embarked on the Blue Ghost 1 lander, launched the 15th of January 2025 and landed on the Moon the 2nd of March 2025 in the "Mare Crisium" basin.
LuGRE, for the first time in history, acquired and processed the GPS and Galileo navigation signals during the transfer orbits from Earth to the Moon, on Moon low orbit and finally on the lunar surface. LuGRE demonstrated the operational use of navigation signals at more than 400,000 km away, representing a unique worldwide result and paving the way to future moon dedicated navigation services (NASA LunaNet and ESA MoonLight).
- High level Agenda
The two-days workshop will be organized as follows:
Day 1: Dedicated to the presentation of the world-record-breaking LuGRE mission, described by the mission's direct participants: ASI, NASA, the Polytechnic University of Turin, and Qascom.
Day 2: Dedicated to an overview of the technological developments and other initiatives dedicated to future lunar navigation and telecommunications.
