The lake as seen by the hyperspectral satellite

17 December 2021

Lake Trasimeno (Umbria, Italy) is a shallow lake (maximum depth of 6,3 meters) of a remarkable naturalistic importance. The catchment basin of the lake lies over a substratum of low permeability, covered by Plio-Pleistocene and Holocene deposits, with a variable content of silicatic and of carbonatic minerals. Suspended material raises from the superficial layer of the bottom sediments to the water column by wind induced circulation and waves, affecting the turbidity of the waters in Lake Trasimeno.

This PRISMA image of Lake Trasimeno was acquired on November 30, 2020. The processing of the satellite data allows estimating water turbidity in Formazin Nephelometric Units (FNU). Data shows a turbidity gradient that varies between 8 and 72 FNU.

This image is a crop of a 30x30 km spotlight acquisition of PRISMA, and was processed in the framework of the ASI project “Sviluppo di Prodotti Iperspettrali Prototipali Evoluti” whose main objective is the prototyping of a subset of L3 / L4 value-added products to be retrieved by means of hyperspectral data processing. Among the prototypes under development, there is the Water Quality product, which aims at analysing the following parameters: Phytoplankton, Total Suspended Matter, Bottom Substrate.
