The PRISMA mission detects hot spot signals from space in a night image

The PRISMA image, acquired  on 1 April 2025  in the Short Wavelength Infrared (SWIR)  has been geocoded and overlapped to Google Earth Map. It shows three hotspots (in white)  in correspondence of the refinery locations in Carirubana area, Venezuela .

This kind of data can be useful to refine the temperature measurements of high temperature phenomena like gas flares from space. In fact when the temperature is evaluated by using  hyperspectral daytime images  they are  prone to be underestimated due  to the contribution of sun  radiance component. PRISMA (PRecursore IperSpettrale della Missione Applicativa) is an Earth Observation system equipped with innovative electro-optical instrumentation, integrating a hyperspectral sensor with a panchromatic camera capable of acquiring images with spatial resolutions of 30 meters and 5 meters, respectively.

The experiment has been developed within the project ComeonBoard PSG!, PI Dr. Dario Spiller La Sapienza-SIA , CO-PI, Dr. Stefania Amici, Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV).
