PRISMA maps the Palisades area

15 January 2025

On January 12, 2025 the PRISMA (PRecursore IperSpettrale della Missione Applicativa) hyperspectral sensor mapped the vast Palisades fire in Los Angeles County, California, which has so far caused 25 fatalities, displaced hundreds of thousands of people, and destroyed numerous buildings – including the mansions of some Hollywood celebrities.

The PRISMA false-color image shows the large burned area in brown-orange tones. Vegetation is shown in green, while urban areas are in light blue/gray tones. PRISMA (PRecursore IperSpettrale della Missione Applicativa) is an Earth Observation system equipped with innovative electro-optical instrumentation, integrating a hyperspectral sensor with a panchromatic camera capable of acquiring images with spatial resolutions of 30 meters and 5 meters, respectively..
