This PRISMA acquisition of December 2020 captured the area near the southernmost tip of South America, just north of Cape Horn. Located at the southern end of the Tierra del Fuego Archipelago, it is where the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans water masses mix.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Known for being part of major worldwide navigation routes up to the twentieth century, the area was infamous for the perils posed by strong winds, high waves and presence of ice.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The southernmost city of the world, Ushuaia, can be seen bounded by the Martial mountain glaciers in the north, and the tracks of the Ushuaia-Malvinas Argentinas airport can be spotted on the small island in the Beagle Channel. Glaciers are particularly evident in the visible bands (false color image on the left).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n
