ASI and Civil Protection collaborate in the management of emergencies

Agreement signed regarding EmerSAT for the development of a communication system in emergency situations

16 Sep 2010

The collaboration continues between the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the Italian Civil Protection National Service. In fact, on 16 September a collaboration agreement was signed between the ASI and the Civil Protection Service to use satellite technologies to strengthen national ability in the management of emergencies. The project is part of the wide range of collaborations that the Italian Civil Protection National Service has with all the relevant bodies in the sector. The agreement deals with the operative involvement of the Italian Civil Protection National Service in EmerSAT, the ASI project that intends to create new applications of space technologies that benefit public institutions and citizens.

The primary objective of EmerSAT is to create and test a pre-operative communication and information support system to be used in the various operational phases of a crisis or emergency situation.
The strategic innovation of the project consists in creating and supplying integrated satellite and terrestrial communications services, planned on the specific requirements of the Civil Protection National System, with relevant improvement of operative performance and reliability, thanks to the ability of the satellite to make effective connections in all conditions.“For the ASI this agreement is not only a way to experiment new technologies and make them available to important partners such as the Civil Protection Service,” explains Enrico Saggese, president of the ASI, “above all we want to trigger a mechanism to identify industrial partners interested in entering this field and developing new products and services for such an important sector.”
