The session of Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the COPUOS (Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space) began on 10 February. The meeting of this particular subcommittee, which in 2014 has reached its 51st edition, will be held until the 21st February at the United Nations headquarters in Vienna. During the opening day, Elod Both, Hungarian Space Office Director, was appointed as Chairman of the Subcommittee.
The Italian Space Agency that supports the participation of Italy’s delegation to these endeavours is unfailingly present. The delegation is led by the Ambassador Filippo Formica, Permanent Representative of Italy to the International Organizations in Vienna.
The ASI takes part in nearly all the items scheduled in the agenda and in all the working groups that are held in the context of the Subcommittee.
Created in 1959, COPUOS aims to promote international cooperation for the peaceful use of space, design space programs to be undertaken under the aegis of the United Nations, to promote research and to study legal problems that can arise from space exploration.
The 74 country strong Committee is divided into two Subcommittees, operating respectively in the technical-scientific and legal fields.
