BED-REST

Simulating the physiological effects of the absence of gravity

Within the framework of the Med programmes the development and realization of missions and/or ground simulations are planned in order to broaden the offering of experiments, allowing for the attainment of objectives and adequate scientific results. For this purpose, within the framework of OSMA and DCMC projects, experimental ground simulation activities are being planned with the Bed-Rest (BR) method.

Bed-Rest is a model of ground study commonly used by the international scientific community for simulating the physiological effects of the absence of gravity on the body. Healthy volunteers stay in bed for a variable period (normally 7 to 120 days) according to the experimental protocol.  The bed-rest modality is used, in particular, for studying the muscular-skeletal system and, in the head-down (-6°) modality, for the study of the cardiovascular and renal systems.  BR allows for experimental continuity, is easily repeated and is relatively low cost. The first national bed-rest took place in July 2007 at the University of Primorska (Slovenia) as well as the second one which took place in August 2008.
